Limbach
American
1904-1971
Russell
Limbach studied at the Cleveland School of Art in the 1920s,
exhibited at the famed Kokoon Club and later became director
of the Cleveland Printmakers. Limbach was an important figure
in the WPA art movement, becoming a technical advisor for the
WPA Graphics Workshop in the 1930s. In the early 1940s, Limbach
moved to Connecticut and became professor of graphic arts and
painting at Wesleyan University. Although, Limbach was an accomplished
painter, he is best known for his graphic work. This is a rare
example of Limbach's landscape painting. The frame backing has
a label from the Munson Gallery (New Haven Connecticut).
