Ter-Arutunian was born in Eastern Europe and studied in Berlin. He was a designer for the Dresden Opera and the Vienna State Opera before emigrating to the U.S. in 1951. In New York Ter-Arutunian became a prolific and influential designer for opera, ballet, and theater. He was the designer for the legendary Balanchine production of the New York City Ballet's Nutcracker, won a Tony award for Redhead in 1959, created numerous addtional designs for Balanchine, and designed for Martha Graham. He also worked with the New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera, and many others. Ter-Arutunian designs are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of the Performing Arts in New York City, the Theatre Collection of Harvard University, and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 1989, Ter-Arutunian donated almost 7,000 designs to the Dance Collection of the Performing Arts Research Center at Lincoln Center.
