Ralph Arnold

1928-2006

 

African-American artist Ralph Arnold studied at the Univeristy of Illinois and the Art Institute of Chicago. Influenced by the Pop Art movement and artists Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, Arnold experimented with collage and mixed media explorations of pop culture. He exhibited in Chicago at the South Side Community Art Center in the 1960s and 1970s, was artist-in-residence at Art & Soul, a collaborative initiated by the Museum of Contempoarary Art, and also exhibited at the Whitney's "Contemporary Black Artists in America." In 1972 Ralph Arnold joined the faculty at Loyola University in Chicago,becoming an influential professor and art department chairman until his retirement in 2000.
