Oliver Balf


Rockport artist Oliver Balf studied Tyler School of Art in New York with Hans Hoffman. He first visited Rockport and Cape Ann in the late 1940s, eventually moving there permanently in the 1950s. Balf won the Best Young Artist prize from the Rockport Art Association in 1961 and received the Carl Bultman prize for best watercolor in 1965. In 1970, Balf was one of the founders of the Montserrat College of Art, from whom he received an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts in 1998. Balf exhibited at the Rockport Art Association, the Cape Ann Historical Association, Judi Rotenberg Gallery in Boston, Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston, the North Shore Art Association, and many others.
