Luis Solari

Uruguayan
1918-1993

Luis Solari, an important Latin American modernist, studied at the Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay in Montevideo in the 1930s and later studied printmaking at l´Ecole Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris and at the Pratt Graphics Workshop in New York. Solari exhibited widely, including exhibitions at Salón Nacional de Bellas Artes and Salón Municipal de Artes Plásticas in Uruguay, and the Sao Paulo Biennial, among many others. Luis Solari is the recipient of  a Lifetime Achievment Award from the Ministry of Education and Culture in Uruguay. Solari lived in the U.S. from the late 1960s until the 1980s. A museum dedicated to the work of Solari --- Museo Luis Alberto Solari --- opened in Uruguay in 1989. Solari is noted for his unusual modernist style featuring elements of Magic Realism, fantasy, and Uruguayan folklore combined with an almost naive painting technique.
