Juvenal Sanso

Juvenal Sanso was born in Spain but moved to Manila in the Philippines in the 1930s. He studied with Fernando Amorsolo at the University of the Philippines School of Art and later studied and traveled in Europe and the United States. In the 1950s and '60s, Sanso exhibited in Manila, Paris, and the United States. During the last several decades, Sanso has had major exhibitions, including retrospectives, at the Philippine Cultural Center, the Lopez Memorial Museum, the Ayala Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in Manila, the Galerie Joaquin, and Galerie Raphael. Recently, Juvenal Sanso was awarded the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit for the Arts. In 2007, Sanso was honored with the distinguished Cross of Isabela by King Juan Carlos I of Spain. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Philippine Art; the Cultural Center of the Philippines; the Smithsonian; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Madrid; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and numerous others. He is regarded as one of the Philippines' most distinguished artists.
