Joseph Pennell was the pre-eminent American printmaker during the first part of the twentieth century. He moved to London early in his career where he became close friends with Whistler. He became a member of the National Academy in 1909. His prints and drawings are in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; and the Brooklyn Museum. He published a number of works on printmaking and draughsmanship, including Pen Drawings and Pen Draughtsmen (1889), Modern Illustration (1895), Lithographs of New York (1905), and Etchers and Etching. This print, "The Three Towers," is a classic example of Pennell's New York etchings.
