James Havard

American
b. 1937

James Havard was born in Galveston, Texas and studied at Sam Houston State College and the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts. Havard's works range in style from realism to abstraction to brut, although he is perhaps best known for being a part of the Abstract Illusionism movement. Havard's paintings are often inspired by Native American and African indigenous cultures, featuring simplistic, emotive forms reminiscent of ancient cave paintings and children's drawings. James Havard's works are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others. He currently lives in Santa Fe.
