Gregorio Prestopino

American
1907-1984

Gregorio Prestopino, perhaps best known as a social realist painter, studied at the National Academy of Design. He was a MacDowell Colony Fellow on numerous occasions, eventually becoming its Director. Prestopino exhibited widely including exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery, among many others. His work is in major public and private collections. In 1957, Life Magazine commissioned Prestopino to produce a series of illustrations for an article on prison.
