Gil Imana

Bolivian
b. 1933

One of the important Bolivian painters and muralists of the last century, Gil Imana studied at Juan Rimsa's Superior de Bellas Artes in the 1940s. He was a founding member of the influential Grupo Anteo. Since the 1950s, Gil Imana has exhibited worldwide, including exhibitions at the Sao Paulo Biennial, the Venice Biennial, the Hermitage Museum, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, and many others. Gil Imana has produced major murals in Sucre and La Paz. In 2012, the National Museum of Art in La Paz held a major retrospecitve, "Love and Tenderness - A Tribute to Gil Imana." In 2014, Imana was awarded the Condor de los Andes with the rank of Knight, the highest distinction given by Bolivia for mertiorious service.
