Esteban
Francés
Spanish
1913-1976
Esteban
Francés was an important member of the surrealist movement
in Paris, Mexico, and New York. Fleeing the Spanish Civil War,
Francés traveled to Paris where became an intimate member
of the surrealist circle that included Breton, Tanguy, Oscar
Dominguez, Victor Brauner, Roberto Matta, and Gordon Onslow Ford,
among others. In the 1930s, Esteban Francés was a paramour
of the important Spanish/Mexican painter Remedios Varo, to whom
he introduced the tenets of surrealism. Shortly after the beginning
of World War II, Francés fled for Mexico where he joined
other ex-patriates Leonora Carrington, Varo, and Wolfgang Paalen
as well as Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Gunther Gerszo. After
several years in Mexico, Francés joined surrealist exiles
in New York where began to collaborate with important choreographer
George Balanchine. Francés worked as a designer for Balanchine
for more than 20 years, including productions such as Renard,
La Sonnambula, and Don Quixote. This painting was
almost certainly a costume design for the 1965 production of
Balanchine's famous Don Quixote.
