Alfred
Dewey was an important illustrator and California landscape painter.
Dewey studied in New York with William Merritt Chase and became
a well-known illustrator for Life, Judge, Harpers, and Century
magazines. He moved to California in the 1920s, settling in Sierra
Madre (a town in the California foothills) where he founded the
Old Globe Art School (1936) and the Sierra Madre Arts Guild.
