Alfred Chadbourn

American
1921-1998

Popular Maine artist Alfred Chadbourn was born in Turkey, studied at the Chouinard Institure in Los Angeles and at Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Grand Chaumiere in Paris following World War II. He first exhibited in Paris at Les Independents and Salon d'Automne in the early 1950s. Chadbourn returned to the U.S. in the early 1950s and taught at Queens College and the Famous Artists School in Connecticut before moving to Maine in 1973 where he lived and worked for the next 25 years. A member of the National Academy of Design, Chadbourn exhibited widely at major venues, winning a Tiffany Fellowship, the Henry Ward Ranger Purchase Award from the National Academy. Chadbourn wrote several books about painting and was recently (2015) the subject of a retrospective at the Ogunquit Museum.
