Miriam Schapiro

Miriam Schapiro was a pioneering feminist artist during the 1960s and 1970s. Schapiro studied at the State University of Iowa, beginning her career as a fulltime artist in the 1950s. In 1971, along with artist Judy Chicago, Schapiro founded the first feminist art program at the California Institute of the Arts. She and Chicago directed the seminal "Womanhouse" exhibition/installation that featured 28 women artists. Schapiro also developed the "femmage" technique that collaged materials traditionally associated with women's activities, a technique she continued to employ throughout her career. Miriam Schapiro exhibited extensively worldwide, received six honorary degrees, a Ford Foundation Grant, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, and many other distincitions.
