Jean Liberte

American
1896-1965

Jean Liberte studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. Influenced by Kenneth Hayes Miller and Albert Pinkham Ryder, Liberte became well-known for dark, dramatic, nocturnal landscapes, often of coastal scenes. Liberte was a member of the Monhegan School, one of several noteworthy artists who visited and painted on Monhegan Island in Maine. Liberte exhibited widely and his work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was elected an Academician of the National Academy in 1960.
